Eva Split (“Eva Split,” “we,” “us”) is a bill-splitting app for the web and iOS, operated by Josh Karges. This policy describes how the service actually works today — not a generic template. Related: Terms of Use.
What the app does
Eva Split lets people photograph a restaurant receipt, add or assign line items, split tax and tip, and share a live link so friends can mark what they ordered. Signing in is optional for collaborating on a shared receipt. An account unlocks receipt history, saved payment handles, and AI scanning.
Information we collect
Account (when you sign in)
Authentication is provided by Google Firebase Authentication. You can sign in with:
- email and password
- Sign in with Apple (iOS)
We receive an account identifier (uid), and typically an email address and display name. Sign in with Apple can supply Apple’s private relay address instead of your real email if you choose Hide My Email. We store uid, email, and display name on your user profile in Google Cloud Firestore so we can show your account, look up entitlements, and (if you save them) payment handles.
Receipts and payment handles
When you create or edit a split, we store in Firestore things like: line items and amounts, who is assigned to each line, tax and tip, people names, payment groups, birthday flags, paid/unpaid markers, currency conversion settings, a title, and who paid. If you enter payment handles (Venmo, PayPal.Me, Zelle, Cash App, Revolut), those strings are stored on your profile and/or on the receipt so others on that split can pay you. Receipt groups (a list of related receipts) are stored the same way.
Receipt photos you upload are stored in Google Firebase Storage so they can be shown on the shared receipt page.
AI receipt scanning (Google Gemini)
If you use AI scan, our Cloud Function sends the receipt image to Google’s Gemini API so it can read line items, subtotal, tax, tip, and total. Google is a third-party subprocessor for that image. We send the photo and a parsing prompt; we do not send your password. We do not control how long Google retains API traffic or whether it uses it for its own purposes — see Google’s Privacy Policy and Gemini API terms. You can always add line items by hand instead of scanning.
Purchases
- iOS: Apple processes the payment. We use RevenueCat to check whether you have Eva Split Pro or unused scan credits. RevenueCat may receive the app user id we set (your Firebase uid) and attributes we pass at login (email and display name), plus purchase and entitlement status. We do not receive or store your Apple ID password or full card number.
- Web: Stripe processes the payment. We store a Stripe customer id on your profile so we can start checkout and open the billing portal. Stripe handles card details; we do not store full card numbers.
On your device
The app keeps some data in the browser or on-device storage, for example: light/dark mode, recent receipts you opened, the name you picked for yourself on a split, a referral code from a shared link, and whether you have seen the demo tour. On iOS, camera and photo library access are used only to photograph or pick a receipt.
Currency conversion
If you turn on live exchange rates, the app requests a rate for the selected currency pair from Frankfurter (a public European Central Bank rate API). That request is the currency pair, not the receipt image or your account.
What we do not collect
- No advertising in the app or on the site.
- No analytics or tracking SDKs. Firebase Analytics is not used.
- No Identifier for Advertisers (IDFA). We do not ask for App Tracking Transparency.
How sharing works (this is the important part)
Receipts and receipt groups are reachable by anyone who has the link. That is how friends split a bill without creating accounts. Anyone holding the link can view the split — including the receipt photo, names, amounts, and any payment handles saved on that receipt — and can edit the collaborative fields (line items, assignments, and so on). Do not put secrets on a receipt, and do not post a split link somewhere public if the bill or handles are sensitive.
Only the signed-in owner can see that receipt in “My receipts” history, or delete it.
Who else processes data
- Google Firebase / Google Cloud — authentication, database, file storage, Cloud Functions, and hosting.
- Google Gemini — AI parsing of receipt photos you choose to scan, as described above.
- Apple — Sign in with Apple and App Store billing on iOS.
- Google Sign-In — if you choose that provider.
- RevenueCat — iOS in-app purchase entitlements.
- Stripe — web payments and the billing portal.
- Frankfurter — live exchange rates, if you enable conversion.
Deleting your account
Signed-in users can delete from My account → Delete account. You must type DELETE. For security we may ask you to sign in again (password, Google, or Apple). Sign in with Apple always re-confirms so we can revoke the Apple credential as Apple requires.
What deletion removes:
- Your Firebase Authentication user.
- Receipts you created, including stored photos and receipts you have already shared by link. Anyone with those links loses access.
- Receipt groups you created.
- Your user profile in our database (including saved payment handles and our copy of your scan/subscription entitlement fields).
- The referral record keyed to your account, if any.
What deletion does not do:
- It does not cancel an App Store subscription. Cancel Eva Split Pro in iOS Settings → your name → Subscriptions. Billing continues until you cancel there, even if the Eva Split account is gone.
- It does not reset the lifetime free-scan limit associated with your email. That counter is stored separately (keyed to a hash of the normalized email) so deleting and recreating an account cannot mint a new batch of free scans.
- It does not erase Apple or RevenueCat purchase history, or automatically delete a Stripe customer record created for web checkout.
- It does not edit receipts you did not create. If your name, item assignments, or payment handles were copied onto someone else’s split, those copies stay on that receipt until its owner changes or deletes it.
If you cannot sign in to use the in-app control, contact us using the details below.
