A receipt group is a named collection of receipts. Eva Split nets everyone’s shares across all of them, cancels out debts that run both ways, and shows a single number per person. Expand any row to audit exactly which dinners (or grocery runs) produced it.
Why one receipt at a time isn’t enough
Real life doesn’t settle on a single night. Alex pays Tuesday. Jordan covers Saturday. Someone Venmos back half of one dinner but not the other. Without a running total, you’re reconstructing a spreadsheet from memory — or worse, letting small IOUs linger because nobody wants to do the math.
Receipt groups keep each bill itemized and fair on its own, then roll everything up. If Jordan owed Alex $12 on one receipt and Alex owed Jordan $20 on another, the group shows Jordan owes Alex $8 — not two separate tabs to reconcile by hand.
Trips and weekends away
A ski weekend, a beach house, a bachelor party — same crew, different meals, different people putting down a card. Split each dinner when you get the check, then add every receipt to a group named something like “Park City 2026.”
By checkout day you have one net balance per person instead of a pile of “you owe me from Thursday” texts. Turn on Simplify payments and Eva Split suggests the fewest transfers to zero everyone out — handy when five friends would otherwise Venmo each other in a circle.
Dinners that never quite get settled
Some friend groups eat out regularly and always mean to settle up later. One person fronts the tab; everyone says they’ll get them back. Weeks pass. The amounts are fair on each receipt, but nobody remembers the running total.
Create a receipt group for your usual crew and add receipts as you go. The balance updates live — mark individual debts paid as Venmos land, or mark a whole person settled when you’re square. Share the group link so everyone sees the same numbers without asking you to re-send screenshots.
Roommates and shared household runs
Groceries, takeout, Costco runs — roommates often share costs across multiple trips, not one restaurant bill. Scan or enter each receipt, assign items to the people who ate them, and drop them into a group for the month.
One roommate might front most of the shopping while another picks up delivery twice. The group nets it all: who is still out of pocket, and by how much. When the month ends, one transfer (or two, with simplify on) clears the slate — without a shared spreadsheet.
How receipt groups work
Each receipt in the group stays a full Eva Split bill — line items, tax, tip, birthday splits, and payment groups included. The group page reads those receipts and computes net balances:
- Matched by name — “Josh” on Tuesday and “josh” on Friday are treated as the same person
- Net, not gross — money you owe someone and money they owe you cancel before the final number
- Per-receipt audit trail — expand any balance to see every contributing receipt, with links back to the original split
- Simplify payments — optional view that suggests fewer person-to-person transfers
- Mark settled — check off debts as they’re paid; syncs back to each member receipt
- Pay buttons — pick your name on the group page and jump to Venmo, Cash App, PayPal, or Zelle for whoever you owe most
- Shareable link — anyone with the URL can view balances; no app install required
How to create a receipt group
Receipt groups live in your signed-in receipt history. Creating and editing a group requires an account; viewing a shared group link does not.
- Split your receipts as usual — one per meal or shopping trip, with a payer set on each.
- Sign in and open My receipts from the menu.
- Select the receipts you want to bundle (up to 30 per group).
- Tap Group selected. Eva Split opens the new group.
- Name the group — “March roommates,” “Vegas trip,” or whatever helps you find it later.
- Copy the group link and send it to everyone who should see the balances.
- Add more receipts anytime from the group page, or remove ones that shouldn’t count anymore. Deleting the group does not delete the underlying receipts.
Receipt groups vs. payment groups
Easy to mix up, different jobs. Payment groups live on a single receipt — they combine couples or families who pay on one card while keeping items assigned to each person. Read how payment groups work.
Receipt groups span many receipts — they answer “what do we owe each other overall?” Payment groups on individual receipts still flow through; the group respects who paid together on each bill.
Tips for accurate balances
- Set who paid on each receipt — balances only include receipts with a payer
- Use consistent names across receipts so Eva Split can match people
- Mark debts paid on the group page (or on the receipt itself) as money moves
- Mixed currencies are shown in separate buckets — a euro trip and a dollar dinner won’t be merged into one number
